In other words, while Peter was trying to protect Rose and find out who was after him, he was also investigating the truth about the metro bombing.

While nothing was proved against Peter – he had nothing to do with the bombing after all – this experience mirrored what had happened to his father. Peter Sutherland’s father was accused of treason and later died in a car crash. Haunted by not knowing whether his father was a traitor, Peter knew exactly what Rose was going through after her aunt and uncle were killed.

Considering how everything in The Night Agent season 1 was tied to the DC Metro bombing and the pasts of Peter and Rose, season 2 will likely not feature another personal missional. Having Peter once again work on a case that is tied to his past would be too repetitive, even though it worked for the first season. The Night Agent had to make viewers care enough about Peter and Rose to follow them for ten episodes, which is why having them work on such a personal case made sense. Naturally, this was the story from The Night Agent book.

However, now that the characters are established, and The Night Agent has become one of Netflix’s most-watched original shows, season 2 can take bigger risks. The fact that there is not a sequel to The Night Agent book means the Netflix show should have plenty of creative liberty to take Peter’s character in unexpected directions. The Night Agent can become an anthology action series in which each season sees Peter, now a Night Agent, working on a different case that has little to no ties to the previous one. Now that the show is expected to have an original story, it remains to be seen whether season 2 will be as good as the first season. While Peter Sutherland is a fun protagonist, The Night Agent’s next mission is what will likely make or break Netflix’s season 2. The mystery of the Metro bombing was enough to get viewers hooked in the first season, yet it has already been solved.
Peter has also found out the truth about his father, who indeed accepted money to leak information. Additionally, Rose understood what her family was involved with, and why they became a target. The Night Agent season 1 was a self-contained story that would have worked just fine as a limited series. However, given its success, it’s no surprise that season 2 is happening. Therefore, season 2 must have a new investigation – or even multiple ones – that is as fun to watch unfold as the one from the first series.
